Description:

By definition, a bandshell is a bandstand with a concave, almost hemispheric wall at the rear that serves as a sounding board.
Expanded Description:

We're looking for bandshells that are permanent structures. Wikipedia further defines a bandshell as "a large, outdoor performing venue typically used by bands and orchestras. The roof and the back half of the shell protect musicians from the elements and reflect sound through the open side and out towards the audience." In some cases, contemporary amphitheaters may include a bandshell as their centerpiece.

Examples of What We're Looking For:

Instructions for Posting a Bandshells Waymark:

For this category, we're looking for structures that have a roof, are enclosed or mostly enclosed on three sides, and have an open front to allow the sound to project out toward the audience. For our purposes, they do not have to be shell-shaped, but they must have a roof and be enclosed or mostly enclosed on three sides (see above photos for examples of what we're looking for).

We're NOT looking for gazebos, open-sided bandstands, or other open air platforms where bands play.

1. NAME: The name of the bandshell and its location should be included in the title. Generally this should be the city/town, state and/or country -- whatever is appropriate to its location.

Example 1: Alice McClelland Memorial Bandshell - Eustis, FL

Example 2: McLaughlin Bandshell - Oshawa, Ontario, Canada

2. COORDINATES: These should be taken directly in front of the bandshell. If this is impossible for any reason, please state this in your description.

3. PHOTOS: At least two original photographs (taken by you) -- a view showing the entire bandshell (this should be the default photo) and a close-up clearly showing a sign with the name of the bandshell. If there is no such sign, please state this and the requirement will be waived. A GPSr photo is not required.

4. LONG DESCRIPTION: Include as much information about the bandshell as you can, especially its unique features and history. It must be different from the information posted in the Quick Description. You must cite your source if you copy any information directly from someone else. Waymarks with no Long Description will be returned for resubmission.

LANGUAGE NOTE: We recognize waymarking as a global hobby and welcome waymarks from all countries. However, if the waymark is written in a language other than English, an English translation is required. The English translation does not need to be perfect, just clear enough for the Officers and other viewers to understand what the waymark is about. And, as always, please cite your sources. Thank you!

Instructions for Visiting a Waymark in this Category:

When visiting a waymark, please take pictures that clearly show the bandshell. If you have pictures with yourself in the bandshell, that would be great too. Also, tell us a little about your visit. It's optional, but if you attended a performance here, tell us about it.
