Abandoned Cemeteries
Managed By: Icon Here Gravediggers
You walk through the woods and stumble upon a gravestone. One becomes two, two becomes three and before you know it you're standing in the middle of an overgrown, forgotten cemetery.
Expanded Description:
Abandoned = NOT Maintained
Maintained = NOT Abandoned

Headstones askew and barely legible, these forgotten and strangely romantic places contain a wealth of information about the history of an area, as well as the people who once lived there.

If you come upon one of these fascinating cemeteries, please mark the coordinates and do a little investigating.

Please note: Abandoned is about the present state of the cemetery, not its past. If the cemetery had been abandoned (not maintained) but is now maintained, then it will not be accepted into this category.

August 2017 addition: In rare cases, a Waymark may be created and approved during the time that a cemetery is truly abandoned, but then later someone comes along and "does something about it" -- fixing up the cemetery so that it is now maintained, and thus, no longer abandoned. In these cases, you may keep the Waymark rather than deleting it; but please change the title so that it begins with (to coin a phrase): UNABANDONED - (including the dash). This maintains the history of the cemetery as having been abandoned at the time of the Waymark. You may also want to change the description to indicate what happened to the cemetery. Here is an example of such a cemetery.

For reasons given earlier, it is not acceptable to submit a new UNABANDONED "abandoned" cemetery Waymark. It's too late. It would have had to have been Waymarked at the time it was still abandoned.
Instructions for Posting a Abandoned Cemeteries Waymark:
  • Record the earliest date of burial
  • Record the latest date of burial
  • Record any of the surnames of the people buried
  • Take one or more photographs of the area
  • Attempt research on the cemetery and its departed guests

  • record cemeteries in use today
  • or cemeteries which are still maintained on a regular basis. Cemeteries that show signs of regular maintenance (mowing, etc.) will be declined.
  • or cemeteries that simply had the last burial "a long, long time ago" if that cemetery is maintained. A common confusion in candidate submissions is that Such-And-So Cemetery has not had a burial for 300 years, or whatever. That simply means that the cemetery is Inactive (to use the term in the Worldwide Cemeteries category). If the site is regularly maintained, it is not Abandoned. Even if it is not knowingly maintained as a cemetery!

Instructions for Visiting a Waymark in this Category:
Take a photo of at least one grave marker and including a qualitative and quantitative description
