U.S. Route 99 - The Pacific Highway
Managed By: Icon Here U.S. 99 Road Trippers
Description:
U.S. Route 99 ran from the border of Mexico to the border of Canada and was the major north/south highway for the West Coast of the United States for decades. This category seeks to waymark the unique pieces of Americana and history that still lie along this long ago supplanted route.
Expanded Description:
Highway 99 ran from the border of Mexico to the border of Canada and was the major north/south highway for the West Coast of the United States for decades. It became a numbered U.S. highway in 1926, however the route existed long before that as a Native American trail, then a traders' mule trail, a stagecoach trail, rail lines and finally as the Pacific Highway, the road that predates the U.S. 99.

The Pacific Highway, sometimes confused with the Pacific Coast Highway (U.S. 101), was championed and a large portion was built by the road building pioneer, Sam Hill, early in the 20th century, long before the U.S. Highway System was established. At the time Hill called it an "auto trail."

The road played an interesting part in the nation's history when it became an important travelling route throughout the 1930's for Dust Bowl immigrant farm workers traversing the state of California looking for work. The California section of the highway is sometimes known as the "Golden State Highway" or "The Main Street of California."

By 1968 Route 99 was completely decommissioned with the completion of Interstate 5. The businesses along the road quickly went into decline as cars whizzed past on the new interstate. A few of these pieces of Americana still remain, ghosts of the past and wonderful examples of America's early love of the automobile. The goal of this category is to find those remaining spots and waymark them before they disappear forever.

The full length of the highway still exists, although at times with other names. Most of California and Oregon's stretches still go by 99, but other than a fifty mile stretch, Washington's portion has been largely renamed as county and city roads. Wikipedia's U.S. 99 article has a helpful chart that lists the current names of 99 as it passes through different sections of Washington.

For additional information about California's section of the highway check out the "Finding Historic Route 99" Website. The "Highways of Washington State" Website has a page on Highway 99 that gives in depth descriptions of the path it takes through the state.

What to post: This category is for cataloging the people, places, events, and things that are a part of the history, culture, and lore of U.S. 99 – anything that captures the spirit of U.S. 99 during its heydey (1910's through 1968). Potential waymarks might be pieces of Americana such as diners or motor lodges, historic markers about the road, historic structures along the road, roadside attractions, etc. Submissions to this category must be found along Route 99 and will be judged as acceptable by qualifying for at least one of these three criteria:

  • Does it represent period culture?
  • Is it distinctive or of significant interest?
  • Is it an important milestone or marker?
  • If you are interested in America's historic highways you also might want to look at these categories: The Dixie Highway, Lincoln Highway Markers, The Mother Road: Route 66, or the U.S. Route 40: The National Road.
  • Instructions for Posting a U.S. Route 99 - The Pacific Highway Waymark:
