Mountain Summits
Description:
The Mountain Summits category is intended to record the specific locations of distinct, noteworthy, significant natural mountain summits.
Expanded Description:

"The Beauty of the Mountain is hidden for all those who try to discover it from the top, supposing that, one way or an other, one can reach this place directly. The Beauty of the Mountain reveals only to those who climbed it..."

- Antoine de Saint-Exupery

Instructions for Posting a Mountain Summits Waymark:

In order for a waymark to be accepted into this category, it must meet two general sets of requirements: Proof of Visit and Sufficient Elevation, Distinct Topography

Proof of Visit Requirement

In order to have your waymark listed in this category, you must have personally visited the summit and obtained the GPS coordinates yourself while there. To assure this condition has been met, this category has a 'proof of visit' photo requirement - without such a photo, your submittal may be declined.

A qualifying proof of visit photograph is one that demonstrates you were actually on the summit. Examples include photos showing yourself, your hiking companions, your GPSr, or some other personal artifact such as piece of hiking equipment or Travel Bug, taken at the summit. A unique photograph of a particular distinctive feature, marker, or structure at the summit will also qualify. The waymark will be disqualified if there is evidence that any of the photos were obtained from the Internet or some other source.

Sufficient Elevation, Distinct Topography Requirement

Since the definition of 'mountain' varies from region to region, submittals to this category should be limited to those summits which meet the following conditions:

  1. The summit elevation is high enough to be considered a true 'mountain' in your region (not just a minor hill or fell).
  2. The summit must have a distinct topography with respect to other nearby peaks (shoulders, inconsequential nearby rises, and false summits are not considered to be distinct from a taller nearby summit, and are likely to be declined). If there are other summits nearby, your waymark submittal is subject to being declined unless you provide evidence (such as a photo depicting the summit topography or information from a topo map) that clearly demonstrates a noticeably distinct topography for your submitted waymark. Specifically, any summit being waymarked must rise at least 200 feet (60 meters) above the low point connecting it to any adjacent higher points. (see diagram)

  3. Special requirement for UK summits: As of August 18, 2010, new waymarks being submitted for any summit in the United Kingdom must have an elevation of at least 2500 feet (760 meters). Lower elevation UK summit waymarks accepted by the category managers prior to August 18, 2010 will be allowed to remain listed in the category.
  • Instructions for Posting a Mountain Summits Waymark:
In order to have your waymark listed in this category, you must have personally visited the summit and obtained the GPS coordinates and qualifying photos yourself while there.

Also, waymarks posted in this category must meet the "Proof of Visit" and "Sufficient Elevation, Distinct Topography" requirements as described above.

Finally, you must provide a description of the mountain in the Long Description field. We prefer that you provide a description in your own words. Information about accessing the mountain (trails, parking, fees) is always appreciated! If the descriptive text provided for the waymark includes text copied in whole or in part from another web site or sites, you MUST provide a "source" reference in the description to give credit to the source from which the text was obtained. Example: "Source: (visit link)
Instructions for Visiting a Waymark in this Category:
To post a visit log for waymarks in this category, you must have personally visited the waymark location. When logging your visit, please provide a note describing your visit experience, along with any additional information about the waymark or the surrounding area that you think others may find interesting.

We especially encourage you to include any pictures that you took during your visit to the waymark.
