Latin American Benchmarks
 allows ratings
Description:
To create a category for recording and categorizing permanent benchmarks, survey points, and monuments in any Latin American country. This would exclude survey nails, ties, and small disks since these are temporary.
Expanded Description:

Similar to the U.S. Benchmarks category, we will not be accepting temporary survey items such as nails, wooden sticks and flags, and most disks smaller than 2 inches in diameter. An exception to this would be if the country your benchmark is in has a standard benchmark diameter smaller than this. If this is the case, documentation must be provided from the agency in the form of a website to prove this is the norm. Chiseled squares will be excluded without documentation due to the fact these are so easy to make and it is difficult to prove it was made for survey purposes.

Before submitting, please see if you are waymarking a benchmark in an approved Latin American country. If its on the not approved list, then it can be waymarked in another category. We will only be accepting benchmarks in countries where there is no other existing category. There are a few exceptions to this rule which are posted further down this page. If you are unsure about a benchmark, please email the category managers so we can update this page as needed. Keep in mind that this category is to fill the gaps in-between other categories.

The following countries that we will accept waymarks from include, but not limited to: Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Aruba, Argentina, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, Bolivia, Brazil, Cayman Islands, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Curacao, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Falkland Islands, Grenada, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Maartin, Saint Vincent and The Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay, or Venezuela

The following countries that we won't accept waymarks from include, but not limited to: British Virgin Islands, French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Netherlands Antilles, Pitcairn Islands, Puerto Rico, Saba, Saint Barthélemy, Sint Eustatius, Turks and Caicos Islands, U.S. Virgin Islands

Benchmarks from the list above can be submitted into the following categories: Australia/NZ Benchmarks, Dutch Benchmarks, French Benchmarks, U.K. and Ireland Trigpoints, US Benchmarks.

If a benchmark or survey point marks an international border with a country that already has an independent benchmark category, then you may submit that benchmark in both categories. Examples include boundary markers along the northern border of Mexico which are both in Mexico and the United States. When listing the region, you must list the waymark location it in a Latin American country to avoid confusion.

If a benchmark was placed by an agency in which that county has its own benchmark category, than you may list it in both categories. Examples would be a U.S.G.S. (United States Geological Survey) benchmark in Panama. We are looking for the location of the benchmark, regardless of the agency that placed it.

Instructions for Posting a Latin American Benchmarks Waymark:
Please read our expanded description FIRST
Not all Latin American countries are included.

1. While most Latin American countries speak Spanish, we do require all waymarks to be submitted with an English translation. This is to ensure the reviewers as well as anyone in the world to have a basic platform of understanding. It also helps the reviewers review the listing to ensure accuracy.

2. Take a photo of the benchmark up close. This must be the main photo of the waymark page and it must be a clear, legible, daytime photo. No nighttime, dark, or blurry photos will be accepted, so multiple photos are encouraged.

3. If you are submitting anything besides a survey marker or monument such as a tower, spire, or chimney, then you must provide documentation. This can be in the form of a weblink or a permanent plaque or sign.

4. We also require at least one additional photo of the surround area with the benchmark in noticeable sight so that it can be located with the help of the photo at a later date by other waymarkers. Please no watermarked or copyrighted photos unless you have received permission. If a waymark is submitted with copyrighted or watermarked photos, it will be declined.

5. Take accurate GPS coordinates from where you can view the benchmark. More than likely, this will be right at the location of the survey monument.

6. A detailed description must be given as to how to locate the benchmark as well as any historical notes about it. Some of this information can be filled in in the variable section. Please note that we will not accept any waymarks with plagiarism, also known as "copy and paste." You may use sources to help guide you create your own, interesting, and unique description. You should be explaining the history of the benchmark to make someone want to go and visit it.

7. Please use these guidelines when creating new waymarks in the category. Ideally, we would like to see the name of the agency or organization who is responsible for the placement of the benchmark followed by the designation. Most of the time both are clear, however, there are some instances where it becomes blurry such as a concrete monument where little to no writing is shown. When this occurs, do your best to name your waymark based off of the information given to you. The reviewers will give their best judgment based off of the information you give us. Which means, the more variables you fill out, the better we can help you should an issue arise. But, for a general rule, we would like to see waymarks named in the following fashion:

Agency/Organization name [marker designation] - City, State/Provence, or Country**

** - The name of the closest city/town must be followed by the abbreviated state or provence. If the country has no states/provinces or has similar, but smaller governing bodies such as parishes, then the name of the country must follow in its unabbreviated form unless normally abbreviated.

Examples:

Estados Unidos Mexicanos Red Geodesic 02 001 Cat III - Ensenada, BC Visit Waymark

Bermudian Government B22 - Sandy's Parish, Bermuda Visit Waymark

Instructions for Visiting a Waymark in this Category:
In order to log a visit to a waymark you must complete the following tasks:

1. Take at least one close up photo of the benchmark or survey point where the lettering is legible. This is to prove that you actually visited the site. Please no watermarked or copyrighted photos unless you have received permission.

2. Explain any differences you've noted between the photos of the original poster verses when you visited the site. Is the benchmark weathered or missing entirely? This information will be useful for future finders.

3. Any new facts that you know of that haven't been addressed in the description?
