Unique Weathervanes
 allows ratings
This category is seeking out unique, one-of-a-kind weathervanes. If it was bought in a store, it isn't unique. Many older civic structures and historic homes have custom weathervanes. This is the place to waymark them. Click on "more detail" above to see the requirements.
Expanded Description:

Only unique weathervanes may be waymarked here. So, in general, weathervanes with farm animals would NOT qualify, unless there is something obviously unique about it. The same is true of arrows, flags, sunbursts, and other common designs. There must be something unique (one of a kind) for it to be accepted.

The weathervane must be mounted on a roof.

A close-up photo of the weathervane is required and a shot of the structure of roofline where it is located. Keep in mind that what may seem unique to you, may actually be common in another region. So each waymark, must have two photos. Photos that are blurred, or too small to show the unique detail of the weathervane may be declined. So, extra photographic efforts may be required.

Instructions for Posting a Unique Weathervanes Waymark:

Locate a unique weathervane. This cannot be a store-bought vane. No farm animals please, unless there really is something unique (one of a kind)about it.

Take two photos. One should be a close-up of the weathervane (as close as you can get) and the other should show the vane situated on top of the building or structure. No GPS in the shot, please! Both photos are required.

(Hint: For the close-up try your zoom setting and take a photo at the maximum resolution of your camera, then crop it before you upload it.)

Weathervanes must be mounted to a roof, steeple or other structure. No weathervanes at ground level will be permitted.

Be aware that not all things mounted on a roof are weathervanes. A weathervane must have directional indicators (usually N, S, E, W) and be mobile. Stationary toppers to steeples, towers, copulas, parapets, etc., will NOT be accepted, no matter how unique or decorative.

One of the photos must appear on the main waymark page. Just select the "Make this image the default image for the waymark" box when you upload the photo.

Provide accurate GPS coordinates as close to the location of the weathervane as you can safely get. You don't need to climb the roof, though!

In your description, add any information you have on the weathervane. Be sure to tell us something about the building it is mounted on - name, history, etc.

SPECIAL NOTE: While the details outlined in our category description, and the requirements listed in the posting instructions, cover the MINIMUM elements and standards for all waymarks in this category, each waymark will also be evaluated by a volunteer reviewer for overall quality and appropriateness. If a reviewer deems that there are deficiencies in some aspect of the waymark, the waymark may be either declined or accepted with request for changes and/or additions in either content or format.

Each waymark will be evaluated on its own merits. We will endeavor to be reasonable and flexible while maintaining the quality standards for the category. If there is a disagreement, try to work it out with the evaluating officer, or appeal to the group leader, but we reserve the right to accept or decline a waymark based on our best judgement.

LANGUAGE NOTE: We recognize waymarking as a global hobby and welcome waymarks from all countries. Because of our international scope, we also acknowledge ENGLISH as our lingua franca. English will create the highest level of accessibility globally. All waymarks must have at least a short description in ENGLISH. We encourage bilingual and multilingual waymarks, but one of the languages must be English. We have volunteer translators to help.

Relying on software or internet based translators, such as Babylon and Google Translate, may NOT yield accurate translations that are intelligible. Use these only when there is no alternative. Although we do not expect grammatical perfection, a waymark may be declined if there the English language is not understandable.

Instructions for Visiting a Waymark in this Category:
Visit to existing waymarks must be accompanied by a new, original photo you took while visiting the weather vane.

If you have any additional information on the weathervane to share, please do so. Give the date and an account of your visit.
