Description:
Abbeys, monasteries and convents around the world.
Expanded Description:
Any abbey, convent, or monastery may be included. Though primarily intended for the Christian religion, there are those of other world religions that are also welcome!! The primary requirement is that they be an established place of formal religious retreat, with resident supervision.

We will also accept inactive sites, or those that may be classified as "ruins," or that have been converted to other uses -- as long as adequate DOCUMENTATION can be provided about its status as an abbey or monastery.

If you have any question about the suitability of any particular location for this category, please contact the group leader.
Instructions for Posting a Abbeys, Convents and Monasteries Waymark:
This is an adopted category so the requirements reflect changes that are not necessarily met by all of the waymarks you may see here, which are grandfathered in, of course.

NAME: This particularly naming convention MUST be followed:
Abbey/Monastery/Convent name - Location
Examples:
Abbey Number One - Berlin, Germany
Abbey Number Two - Hometown, Iowa

1. Personally obtained GPS coordinates. These should be taken as near to the entrance as possible. Use a viewpoint only if access is restricted. Please explain this in your description!

2. At least TWO personally taken photos. One should show an overview of the building and grounds and the other must show a clear view of a sign or lettering showing the name of the facility. Multiple photos are encouraged to give as much of an overview as possible. If there is no sign, you may substitute another close-up photo. Please explain this in your description. Pleas do NOT include your GPSr in any photo!

3. A good description of the waymark with as much background as possible. Do a little research to make your waymark a valuable contribution to the category. Please include information about access to the location--roads, trails, parking, visitor facilities, tours, etc. The idea is to encourage visits, so anything that would help the potential visitor would be good to include. NOTE: All quoted material must be clearly indicated and the source given, including URL if from a web site.

SPECIAL NOTE: While the details outlined in our category description, and the requirements listed in the posting instructions, cover the MINIMUM elements and standards for all waymarks in this category, each waymark will also be evaluated by a volunteer reviewer for overall quality and appropriateness. If a reviewer deems that there are deficiencies in some aspect of the waymark, the waymark may be either declined or accepted with request for changes and/or additions in either content or format.

Each waymark will be evaluated on its own merits. We will endeavor to be reasonable and flexible while maintaining the quality standards for the category. If there is a disagreement, try to work it out with the evaluating officer, or appeal to the group leader, but we reserve the right to accept or decline a waymark based on our best judgement.

LANGUAGE NOTE: We recognize waymarking as a global hobby and welcome waymarks from all countries. Because of our international scope, we also acknowledge ENGLISH as our lingua franca. English will create the highest level of accessibility globally. All waymarks must have at least a short description in ENGLISH. We encourage bilingual and multilingual waymarks, but one of the languages must be English. We have volunteer translators to help.

Relying on software or internet based translators, such as Babylon and Google Translate, may NOT yield accurate translations that are intelligible. Use these only when there is no alternative. Although we do not expect grammatical perfection, a waymark may be declined if there the English language is not understandable.

Instructions for Visiting a Waymark in this Category:
Describe your visit, including the date, with as much detail as possible, AND contribute at least ONE PHOTO, original, different from those already in the gallery, if possible.
