Description:: A category for waymarking places to watch trains in action. This activity is known as railfanning or trainspotting. Trains can be for work or transport. Including other types of rail guided modes of transportation.

Expanded Description:

Waymarks can be railyards, sidings, or viewing areas along trolley lines, incline railways, shortlines, industry spurs, and monorails. This list is just a list to get you started on your journey.

Railfanning or trainspotting truly is global.
The names and terms might be different, but the appeal is universal.
Waymarkers should come up with some interesting locations to view activities and traction types we hadn't thought of!

All Active Rail Locations must be safe and accessible to the public. Please visit this link for safety tips. Whether you're waymarking or visiting these are good rules to follow! Operation Lifesaver

All railroads must be active. No abandoned lines.

No trespassing on railroad or industry property.

No viewing areas that require you to cross the tracks in an unsafe manner, a sidewalk, tunnel or footbridge should be provided.

Areas of high crime and those subject to frequent vandalism should not be listed.

Please try to include in your description, times of high and low rail activity. Such as "Weekends are slow, try to visit this site during the week."

Include all road names associated with the line if known. CSX, BN, UP, NS etc.

Unless you know specific timetables, mainlines normally do not provide steady enough activity, sidings for switching are better at providing opportunities for visitors to see trains in action.

The options are:
1. Railyard
An area where the railroad conducts its daily work business, a hub with multiple track. It can have many functions and usually has a lot of activity.
2. Siding\Holdout
Usually areas for trains to wait for others passing or to change crew. It can however be used to service track side industry.
3. Mainline
The main track(s) the railroad uses to get from place to place.
4. Industrial or Agriculture Spur
Rails branching off from the mainline, usually to service industry. The most common uses for spurs to load/unload freight, chemicals, materials or food stuffs. Spurs tend to travel farther away from the mainline then sidings.
5. Maintenance Facility
Areas for railroad maintenance equipment or repair.
6. Other Describe Below

Please remember that the focus of this category is on viewing rail related activity in action. The focus is not on depots, bridges, roundhouses, etc. Waymarks which focus on these aspects of a location will be denied.
