Description:: Identifies religious buildings that are, or have been, called a cathedral.

Expanded Description:

A cathedral is simply a church that contains a cathedra, the seat or throne of a bishop. As a building it need not be large, impressive or ancient, nor of any particular style. It is usually situated in a city.
Cathedrals were usually built as such. They tend, though not always, to be demonstrations of the power and grandeur of the Church in that area.

Cathedrals are usually for Christian worship and may be know in different countries by different names Duomo, Dom, La Seo,Se, Minster, Munster

Sometimes the old title of Cathedral bestowed on a church remains even though the “cathedra” has been moved elsewhere. Antwerp Cathedral would be an example of this. This has been called a proto-cathedral and is permissible in this group as the Term cathedral remains and it is well known as such.

The primary requirement is that the church is, or was known as a cathedral ( including words used in other languages) and is used for formal religious worship. If you have any question about the suitability of any particular location for this category, please contact a group member.
