Artistic Welcome Signs
Managed By: Icon Here Welcome Wagon
Description:
Communities often create wonderful artwork for their welcome signs – paintings, carvings, or even sculptures. This is a place to showcase these signs and the communities that they represent.
Expanded Description:
Although there is a long-standing category for “Welcome Signs,” it is strictly limited to those that have a slogan or motto on them. The “Pictorial Village Signs” excludes those that are specifically “welcome” signs, and is very narrowly defined. This category is for welcome signs that have a significant artistic component to them.

There are two basic qualifications for inclusion in this category.

1). The sign must be a WELCOME sign. Usually this means that the word “Welcome” or its equivalent will appear somewhere on the sign. Usually these are placed at an entrance to the town. If the placement and design of the sign clearly indicate that it is intended to be a welcome sign, then it may be accepted even in the absence of wording. (The waymark creator must document this). Other town signs that are NOT welcome signs will not be accepted. The sign must be a welcome to a neighborhood, village, town, city, state, province, or even country, as long as they otherwise qualify. Signs for businesses, schools, parks, natural features etc. will not be accepted. Only permanent signs will be accepted – no banners, posters, flags, or other temporary signs, please.

2). The sign must have a picture, carving, sculpture or other significant artistic feature that represents some aspect of the community. Thus, just a decorative border, for instance, does not qualify. While there is not a specific size requirement for the graphic or artistic element, it should be a prominent part of the sign, not just a small logo or figure in the corner, for instance. A general guideline would be art that comprises at least half of the sign. In general, the artistic component should be part of the sign itself, although if the base has significant artistic merit, or if there are other elements that have significant visual appeal, these may also be considered.

Each sign should be unique. Only ONE example accepted of any particular design. Mass produced, or “cookie-cutter” designs, such as those often found at U.S. state borders, will not be accepted.

Signs may also have slogans, mottoes, dates or other wording. As long as they meet the qualifications above, they are welcome.

Naturally there is a degree of subjectivity here. It is our intention to be more inclusive than exclusive while trying to maintain a balance between the truly artistic welcome signs and those that are only minimally so. Do not try to push the envelope by submitting questionable or really borderline waymarks. To help illustrate what is acceptable and what is not, here is a fairly long collection of examples.

Before posting, though, please read the "Instructions for Posting a Waymark" section carefully.

NOT ACCEPTED

Small, non-artistic graphic

Single, very small graphic

Incidental graphic not representative of the town

Beautiful setting, but no artistic elements to the sign.

Cookie-cutter state sign

ACCEPTED

About the minimum. Half the sign, but significant, creative graphic.

Also, close to minimum, but acceptable.

Major graphic element

Major graphic element

Artistic element not part of the sign proper, but representative of the area

Hand-carved Sign

3-D Sculpture

Beautiful tile work

Instructions for Posting a Artistic Welcome Signs Waymark:

1). COORDINATES obtained by a personal visit to the site. The coordinates should be as close to the sign as possible. This may mean getting out of the car and walking to the sign. If the sign cannot be accessed safely or because of obstructions, state this in the description.

2). PHOTOS: A minimum of TWO photos are required. One must be a clear, legible close-up view and one must be a view showing the sign and its surroundings for perspective.

3). NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION: The description should have two elements.

FIRST, a description of the sign itself noting especially the artistic, graphic elements that make this sign unique. This is an art category, so please describe the art and how it relates to the community. Why was this specific art included on the welcome sign?

SECOND, at least a few sentences or paragraph about the town or city represented by the sign. If you can explain the connection between the artwork or graphics of the sign, and the town, that is the best.

SPECIAL NOTE: While the details outlined in our category description, and the requirements listed in the posting instructions, cover the MINIMUM elements and standards for all waymarks in this category, each waymark will also be evaluated by a volunteer reviewer for overall quality and appropriateness. If a reviewer deems that there are deficiencies in some aspect of the waymark, the waymark may be either declined or accepted with request for changes and/or additions in either content or format.

Each waymark will be evaluated on its own merits. We will endeavor to be reasonable and flexible while maintaining the quality standards for the category. If there is a disagreement, try to work it out with the evaluating officer, or appeal to the group leader, but we reserve the right to accept or decline a waymark based on our best judgement.

LANGUAGE NOTE: We recognize waymarking as a global hobby and welcome waymarks from all countries. Because of our international scope, we also acknowledge ENGLISH as our lingua franca. English will create the highest level of accessibility globally. All waymarks must have at least a short description in ENGLISH. We encourage bilingual and multilingual waymarks, but one of the languages must be English. We have volunteer translators to help.

Relying on software or internet based translators, such as Babylon and Google Translate, may NOT yield accurate translations that are intelligible. Use these only when there is no alternative. Although we do not expect grammatical perfection, a waymark may be declined if there the English language is not understandable.

Instructions for Visiting a Waymark in this Category:
Please give the date and brief account of your visit - something more than, "Drove past this today." You are encouraged to add a new photo, but this is not mandatory. If you can add any further information about the sign or community, that would be appreciated.
