Whispering Galleries
Description:
Whispering Galleries are areas in which the ambient architecture is able to broadcast weak sounds relatively great distances and can be heard. These Whispering Galleries can be an acoustical anomaly found in a domed rotunda or arch or they can be deliberately constructed within a science museum.
Expanded Description:
Whispering Galleries are able to send whisper-like sounds along an elliptically formed wall and ceiling from one end of the room to another with minimal degradation in the sound quality.

So two people face the wall on opposite sides of the room and should be able to communicate by merely using a whisper.

Strange echos from a loud noise or shout would not constitute a Whispering Gallery.

Whispering Galleries are not the talking tubes and horns commonly found in children's playgrounds.

A sample list of Whispering Galleries can be found through this wikipedia link: Whispering Gallery

It provides a good idea of what to look for when searching for a Whispering Gallery.

But not all domes, arches and rotundas are whispering galleries, therefore this category will require some form of documentation your waymark is an actual whispering gallery.

Acceptable documentation includes:
· A photo of a plaque found on site.
· A scan of a brochure, pamphlet or book.
· An internet link identifying the site as a whispering gallery.

(If you feel the scanned text violates copyright laws, please include your concern in the private message box. Group members will delete the image after approving the waymark.)

In the event a Whispering Gallery is found but does not offer acceptable documentation, the waymarker must provide EXACT details on how to duplicate the Whispering Gallery effect such as the position of the two people with respect to entrances, pillars, or other landmarks. It will be at the reviewer's discretion whether or not the description was sufficient enough to duplicate the Whispering Gallery effect.

Some buildings, although available to the general public, do not permit photography inside - such as churches and government buildings. If you can document such a condition, you may submit an original photograph of the building. If possible, please highlight the architectural element that provides the Whispering Gallery.
Instructions for Posting a Whispering Galleries Waymark:
(1) The Whispering Gallery must be accessible to the general public and available at least seasonally.

(2) The coordinates must be for the main entrance to the building. Please identify where your coordinates are if otherwise.

(3) Identify where the Whispering Gallery is located if part of another attraction or destination.

(4) List the acceptable documentation or directions described from above.

(5) List any current fees and hours of operation. Please include months of operation if open seasonally.

(6) An original photo of the Whispering Gallery must accompany the listing. Where photography is prohibited within the building, a photo of the building will be accepted.

(7) Although the Secret Message Variable is not required, a subsequent visitor can add their own secret message if you leave it blank. Therefore it may be in your own best interest to add a secret message.

NOTE: Extraneous elements, such as counters, banners, widgets or other personal embellishments and hyperlinks that do not enhance the waymark directly, will be NOT accepted and will result in the waymark being declined.
Instructions for Visiting a Waymark in this Category:
