The French built Fort Beauséjour in 1750-1751 to advance their interests in the disputed borderlands of Acadia. It was seized by the British in 1755 and renamed Fort Cumberland. The British abandoned the fort in 1835.

St Mary Somerset church has existed since the 12th century. A previous church on the site was destroyed by the Great Fire and was rebuilt by Wren. The body of the church was demolished in 1871 leaving just the tower.

St Olave's Anglican church existed on this site from the 12th century. The church was rebuilt by Wren following the Great Fire. The church was demolished in 1887 leaving just the tower and west wall that has had modern offices added to it.
