Almost nothing is left of Hattert Castle. An unprecedented tank battle takes place in its vicinity between the end of September and mid-October 1944. First, an American armored division takes on the Germans. The weather conditions are harsh. Rain turns the battlefield into a large mud pool in which tanks can maneuver badly. The Americans suffer heavy losses. They are relieved by a British armored and infantry division. The castle is completely destroyed during the battle.
