Description:
Sites historically important to the Second World War can be recorded here.
Expanded Description:
World War II (abbreviated WWII), or the Second World War, was a worldwide conflict fought between the Allied Powers and the Axis Powers, from 1939 until 1945. Armed forces from over seventy nations engaged in aerial, naval, and ground-based combat. Spanning much of the globe, World War II resulted in the deaths of over sixty million people, making it the deadliest conflict in human history. The war ended in an Allied victory.

On September 1, 1939, Germany, led by Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party, invaded Poland. On September 3 at 11.15 GMT, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand, followed six hours later by France, responded by declaring war on Germany, initiating a widespread naval war.

The Empire of Japan invaded China on July 7, 1937.

The German High Command under Generaloberst Alfred Jodl surrendered unconditionally all German forces on May 7, 1945 in Rheims, France.

The Japanese surrendered on August 14, 1945, or V-J day, signing the Japanese Instrument of Surrender on September 2. The Japanese troops in China formally surrendered to the Chinese on September 9, 1945.

Instructions for Posting a World War II Sites Waymark:
Sites recorded here must be in some way historically important to the Second World War.

Some examples are locations of armament factories, locations important in the development of technology specifically for the war or displays of that technology, the locations of secret laboratories in the U.S., sites along the landing beaches of Normandy and elsewhere, battlefield cemetaries, WWII era bunkers, casemates, and the remains or locations of military installations/camps used during WWII all over the world, battle locations, locations subjected to heavy bombing, and wherever places were defended from the opposing forces. It also includes former concentration/internment camps, museum exhibits, hiding places of persons wanted by the occupiers, locations of resistance activity, sites where unexploded ordnance fell and was discovered during or after the war, still existing bomb craters, and buildings which took heavy damage but are still standing today or have been restored to something closely resembling the original appearance.

The above is not intended to be an exhaustive list.

Excluded are locations of political events, and WWII memorials which are covered as a separate category. Also please note that holocaust memorials are better placed in WWII memorials or in the Holocaust category.

Locations related to the Asian theater can be considered significant only if they are relevant to the period beginning with the Japanese invasion of China on July 7, 1937 and ending on or before the surrender of Japan troops in China on September 9, 1945. Locations related to the European theater can be considered significant only if they are relevant to the period beginning with the German invasion of Poland on September 1, 1939 and ending with the German surrender on May 7, 1945.

The Waymark description should clarify the link between the site and its relation/importance to WWII.

A recent photo of the site taken by the person submitting the waymark is required.
