Churchyard Crosses
Managed By: Icon Here Churchyard Crosses
The aim for this category is to find crosses situated within churchyards which are free standing crosses and not attached to an individuals grave.
Expanded Description:
A Christian cross also known as the Latin cross or crux ordinaria. It is the most common symbol of Christianity.
Most Dartmoor crosses have been carved out of single block of granite, many are roughly cut due to the fact they go back to the time of the monasteries, some which are believed to more than 1300 years old.

In Celtic regions of Ireland and Great Britain, many free-standing upright crosses were erected, beginning at least as early as the 7th Century. Some of these 'Celtic' crosses bear inscriptions in runes. There are many surviving free-standing crosses in Cornwall (famously St Piran's cross at Perranporth) and Wales, on the island of Iona and in the Hebrides, as well as the many in Ireland.
