Pergolas
Managed By: Icon Here Pergolas
Description:
This category's goal is to highlight the many pergolas located around the world. Most are freestanding and some are attached to an existing building. Pergolas submitted to this category are required to be artistic in their design and/or have some history attached to them. If they have some ornamentation or foliage in their creations, even better. Plain-looking, run-of-the-mill pergolas submitted here will be denied.
Expanded Description:
A pergola is a structure usually found in a garden, park or a public place and provides a shaded walkway or passageway for visitors. Pergolas may have a sitting area as well. Pergolas are usually freestanding structures designed of vertical posts or pillars that support cross-beams and sturdy open rafters forming the roof, forming three sides. Green or flowering vines are often trained and attached to many pergolas. Two-sided pergolas will be accepted into the category on a case-by-case basis.

*NOTE* Pergolas are usually larger and longer than arbors. Arbors may be accepted into the category if they are large enough and contain enough visual appeal ('wow' factor). We are not looking for the small, slim, entryway arbors that are commonplace in gardens or parks unless they have historical merit or great artistic value attached. If you're in doubt, message any one of the officers with an attached picture and they will suggest whether or not to submit a pergola or arbor.

Gazebos and pavilions are other structures that are sometimes confused with pergolas. They are octagonal or hexagonal structures with no walls. The roof is typically supported by pillars or wooden supports placed around the outer circle of the base. They should instead be submitted into the Gazebos category.

Pergolas are increasing in popularity, especially in public parks, gardens and bus stops. They provide visitors with a great place to relax without being out in the open. If you happen upon a pergola in a public place and feel it contains historical, artistic or other significance, we want you to waymark it here! If it looks more like the run-of-the-mill type one would find in someone's backyard or garden store, please do not submit it here. The pictures below should give you a good idea of what we're looking for. The Pergolas officers will use their best judgment to determine if a pergola submission meets the requirements. If there is any doubt, the officers have been encouraged to send a submission to vote. The best advice to give on pergolas is: the more artistic, historical or having a 'wow' factor, the better. We would also love to see pergolas with flowering vines attached in season!

Instructions for Posting a Pergolas Waymark:
Any pergola submitted to this category should be a structure that meets the minimum requirements established by the Pergolas officers. These minimum requirements are the following:

1) The structure should contain elements that give it value and represent something that fellow waymarkers would want to visit.

2) The Pergola must be freestanding, with a minimum of three sections (two-sided pergolas will be accepted on a case-by-case basis). A section consists of a pillar and an open space. The next section begins at the next pillar. The Pergola can be made of wood, metal or natural materials, such as a vine.

3) The Pergola must be publicly accessible and in a permanent location. Please do not submit a pergola from a private property or private residence.

4) Long Description Requirements: A paragraph of a minimum of two sentences about the pergola, its history (if known) and its location. A photograph of any historical marker that references a pergola, or a historical article connecting it to the pergola must be included. If you are referencing an article, a link to your source or quoted text is required. The source MUST be cited. If there is a website about the location, provide a link in the variables below.

5) NAMING YOUR WAYMARK: You may give your waymark any title you'd like but it must include the location (park, garden and etc.), (space hyphen space), followed by the city and state/province while the country is optional.

Example: Hillside Historical Gardens - Vancouver, BC
            or
Pergola at corner of Fifth and Main - Longstown, PA

Failure to follow this title requirement will result in your waymark being denied.

6) PHOTOGRAPHS: Good photographs are a must. The submitter must include at least two original images: One clear photograph showing the entire pergola and its surroundings. If the pergola is of considerable length and one photograph does not show the entire pergola, provide an additional photograph. The second photograph should be of the interior of the pergola showing the underside or other interesting feature. What is it that you noticed most about the pergola? Personal observations are encouraged. If there is a sign or plaque about the pergola also include a photo in the gallery. A transcription of the plaque or sign is appreciated.

7) COORDINATES: Personally obtained coordinates are required.

8) LANGUAGE: An English Translation is required.
