U.S. Historic Survey Stones and Monuments
 allows ratings
Description:
This category is for non-disk monuments located in the United States whose position was established by surveying.
Expanded Description:
There are many interesting monuments used to mark the position of a point officially established by surveyors. This category is for those that are not the usual disk type of survey marker. Many of them are over a hundred years old and have their own special historical significance.

This category includes: geodetic survey monuments, cadastral survey monuments, geographic survey monuments, boundary monuments, border monuments, pre-1900 highway mile markers and other types of survey monuments that are solid, standing monuments and can be made of out of any of several types of materials but are not the usual disk type of survey marker.

Along with disks, this category excludes: pipe caps, rod markers, buildings, parts of buildings, items mounted on buildings, towers of any type, lights, beacons, mountains, smokestacks, poles, antennas, nails, rivets, wood stakes, signs, highway right-of-way markers, chiseled or painted marks and private property corner markers.

Some monuments have a disk mounted on them and such monuments are acceptable provided that they were not made simply as a monumentation structure for mounting the disk. An example of such an acceptable monument would be a boundary monument established in 1850 with a disk marker mounted in it in 1930.

This category accepts items that meet the above criteria whether or not there is a datasheet in the geocaching database for it.
