Flags of Organizations
Managed By: Icon Here Flag Wavers
Description:
This group will seek out and record examples of flags that represent organizations, corporations, institutions, businesses, agencies, or any other group that is not a political/governmental division. Only ONE example of any specific flag will be accepted into the category.
Expanded Description:

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS
In general a flag must bear a logo or symbol representing a specific organization and/or the name of the organization. It must represent and identify a specific organization, not be a flag of general nature or a flag sponsored for a cause. It must be unique to that organization or business. Flags must be mounted for public display, usually on a flag pole which may be either freestanding or mounted on a building or other structure. Flags that are mounted on a flat surface, draped, or used in a decorative fashion are not eligible.

All flags must be on permanent display at an identifiable location. Flags put up for special events or other temporary purposes are not eligible.

EXAMPLES OF QUALIFYING FLAGS

EXCLUSIONS:

flags promoting a cause
any flags representing a political/governmental entity or division

BANNER or FLAG

Flags are officially adopted by a organization or business to represent and identify it, and are usually displayed flying horizontally in the same way that national, state, or municipal flags are.

Banners, may have the name of the business or organization, but are not official flags, and are often displayed in groups, mounted vertically, and are used more as advertisement and promotion rather than general identification.

There are exceptions, of course, but this is the general difference. Here are a few examples of banners that are NOT ACCEPTED:

UNIQUE WAYMARK RULE

Since many organizations have multiple locations, and therefore multiple examples of a specific flag, only ONE instance of any particular flag will be accepted into the category. Each flag must be unique in design; a difference of size, for instance, does not qualify a flag as a unique entry. So, it is important to browse or search the category to see if the flag you want to submit already has a waymark. If two or more waymarks are submitted before one of them is accepted and approved, the one with the earlier submission date/time will be accepted.

NOTE: A list of organizations already waymarked will be maintained on this site, and kept as current as is reasonably possible.

Instructions for Posting a Flags of Organizations Waymark:

1). COORDINATES: Personally obtained coordinates must be obtained as close to the actual flag as possible. Coordinates should NOT be taken at, or from viewing areas unless access to the actual flag location is somehow restricted. If the flag is mounted on a building, coordinates must be at the entrance to the building, or other reasonable part of the building.

2). PHOTOGRAPHS
At least TWO photographs must be submitted. One should show the flag and its background showing the building or location where it is displayed. The second photo must be a clear close-up showing all of the flag's logo, symbol, design or lettering - clearly distinguishable and readable. See the Municipal Flags category for examples of what are acceptable views for this category. We realize that these photos are difficult to obtain, requiring the right wind conditions, a good viewing point, and a lot of patience! If your photos are not up to standard, don't submit the waymark, but try again for that special photo.

While we don't expect professional photography, waymarks submitted with underexposed, blurred, skewed or otherwise poor quality photos may be declined. All photos must be the waymarker's original photos and be placed in the photo gallery for the waymark.

3). DESCRIPTIONS: Keep in mind that the quick description is what people see when browsing, so do your best to give a succinct description that will give people at a glance an overview of the waymark.

In the long description, include any relevant information about this particular location AND the organization represented by the flag. Describe any symbols and mottoes and their meanings, if known. If you copy and paste, you MUST give proper attribution.

4). VARIABLES: Please make a good faith effort to provide the information for the variables. Most are not required as they may not apply in all instances. In particular, try to provide a URL to the web site of the organization represented by the flag.

5). WAYMARK NAME: The waymark title should begin with name of the organization represented by the flag, followed by any clarifying identification for the location. The city and state or country must be at the end of each waymark . (Two letter state abbreviations are preferred for U.S. sites).
Use the following examples as a guide:
Sharp Paper Company - Corporate Headquarters - Chicago, IL

SPECIAL NOTE: While the details outlined in our category description, and the requirements listed in the posting instructions, cover the MINIMUM elements and standards for all waymarks in this category, each waymark will also be evaluated by a volunteer reviewer for overall quality and appropriateness. If a reviewer deems that there are deficiencies in some aspect of the waymark, the waymark may be either declined or accepted with request for changes and/or additions in either content or format.

Each waymark will be evaluated on its own merits. We will endeavor to be reasonable and flexible while maintaining the quality standards for the category. If there is a disagreement, try to work it out with the evaluating officer, or appeal to the group leader, but we reserve the right to accept or decline a waymark based on our best judgement.

LANGUAGE NOTE: We recognize waymarking as a global hobby and welcome waymarks from all countries. Because of our international scope, we also acknowledge ENGLISH as our lingua franca. English will create the highest level of accessibility globally. All waymarks must have at least a short description in ENGLISH. We encourage bilingual and multilingual waymarks, but one of the languages must be English. We have volunteer translators to help.

Relying on software or internet based translators, such as Babylon and Google Translate, may NOT yield accurate translations that are intelligible. Use these only when there is no alternative. Although we do not expect grammatical perfection, a waymark may be declined if there the English language is not understandable.

Instructions for Visiting a Waymark in this Category:
Visits may be to the specific flag location of the waymark OR to another location of the same flag.

FOR NEW LOCATIONS YOU MUST GIVE COORDINATES FOR THE FLAG VISITED! Please briefly describe the location, and how it is related to the original waymark location.

ONLY ONE VISIT PER WAYMARK PER PERSON

For all visits upload at least one original photo of the flag location.

For ALL visits, give the date of the visit and briefly describe your experience. Include any additional information you may have about the flag or organization.
