War of 1812
Managed By: Icon Here The 2nd Revolution
Description:
The sub-section to the Napoleonic War (1793-1815), fought primarily in the United States, at sea, & in Canada - Between 1811 and 1815.
Expanded Description:

Locate a War of 1812 monument or memorial, or historic marker with reference to the War of 1812. Monuments covering multiple wars may be submitted as long as the war of 1812 portion is featured as a separate section.

The time period of this War was June 18, 1812 to December 24, 1814 (official). Actual War raged from 1811 until March 23, 1815.

All markers, world wide are acceptable, but location of sites probably would be Eastern and Central North America, Gulf Coast, Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

Instructions for Posting a War of 1812 Waymark:

Instructions for Posting a War of 1812 waymark:

1.) Please give the basic name of the memorial, monument or marker you are submitting.

Titles should be factual and must contain the monument name and the city, state (or: province, territory) where it is located. Waymark titles that contain anything else but the actual name and the city/state where it is located will be declined by the group.

2.) This category requires at least two original photos. One of the entire monument or memorial or marker taken by the person posting the new waymark and one location view (i.e. the overall area). These photos should be clean - (i.e. a photo of just the submission). Daytime photos only, please. No GPS receivers, please. No vacation photos, please. No group photos, please. Be sure it is a quality photo.

Taking and submitting separate close-ups of inscriptions, details, embossed images, sections, is highly recommended. Additional photos of the over all from different angles would also be highly appreciated.

3.) If the site covers multiple wars or events, three photos will be required. One close up of the whole waymark, one long view, and another of the War of 1812 section or inscription.

4.) Proper coordinates are required. Basic directions or locations are suggested. On hard to find items, specific directions would be highly appropriate.

5.) The date the item was erected or dedicated is optional but strongly encourage. You can usually find this on the back, sometime on a plaque, and sometimes inscribed in the marble. You can, on occasion, find this by doing some research on the internet.

6.) Indicate whether this is a private or public monument or marker, if known. Private Markers, Monuments, Memorials are ones built/erected by private groups,(i.e. the Daughters of the American Revolution [DAR]). Public monuments, memorials or markers are built by governments, large and small. (i.e. countries, cities, villages.)(optional)

7.) All text, whether it be inscribed in marble, on a plaque, or marker MUST be included in the long description. (Only exception: a long list of names. This will be as exception as long as a clear photo where all names are readable (readable to weak eyes); is provided in the gallery or shown on the main page.)

8.) Provide in the long description a verbal description of the waymark, and the environment in which it resides. (in a median, traffic circle, city park, memorial park, etc.) Draw us a mental picture so we can share it with you and make others want to visit there.

9.) Record the name of the entity that built/erected the item. (optional)

10.)This is a history sensitive category. Tombstones could qualify, if enough history of the person is also provided. A basic tombstone, with name, dates, and a War of 1812 mention, would not be enough.
Markers of incidents, not mentioning the War of 1812, but during the same time period, MUST like tombstones have supporting evidence that it is connected. That information must have the source location identified and provided. 11.) Rate the submission. 1 to 5.
