Expanded Description:

The Adventures of Tintin by Hergé is one of the most popular and beloved comics in Europe and is popular in many other countries of the world as well. The first Tintin comic was published in Belgium in 1929, but by 2007, Tintin had been published in more than 70 languages with sales of more than 200 million copies.

In Europe, Belgium has a strong tradition for comics, and the stories about Tintin are part of this tradition. The clean and precise drawings in the Tintin stories are one of the comic’s key characteristics. One of the remarkable details of the stories is the way Hergé made drawings based on his studies of real life objects or locations. For example, Marlinspike Castle in the Tintin stories is modeled after the central section of the Chateau de Cheverny in northern France. Examples of other real life locations depicted in the Tintin books include the Hotel Cornavin and Cornavin Station in Geneva, Switzerland (in The Calculus Affair); the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France (in Prisoners of the Sun); St. Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow, Russia (in Tintin in the Land of the Soviets); and the Luxor Temple in Luxor, Egypt (in Cigars of the Pharaoh) to name a few. Some other real life locations appearing in The Adventures of Tintin are mentioned at the Wikipedia page titled Settings in the Adventures of Tintin and at the Wikipedia pages for the individual Tintin comics (see List of Titles). Others can be located by reading the stories themselves -- they can often be borrowed from public libraries.

The British author Michael Farr has written several books about Tintin. This book, in particular, gives a very detailed description of the real world locations and subjects based on Hergé’s research. To get a quick view of some of these locations, take a look at this map (works only on Firefox - NOTE: Click OK on the pop up box that says "Bad or null KML" and then click on any of the items in the list on the left side of the screen). A relaxed but still thorough way to discover the worldwide locations would be to watch this French documentary about the comics. Additional information can be found at the Official Tintin website.

Instructions for Posting a It's All About Tintin Waymark:

Please read the following carefully!

Waymarks in this category must include the name of the location/object followed by the name of the nearest city and country. Example: Marlinspike Castle - Cheverny, France.

A description of the location/object must be included in the Long Description.

LANGUAGE NOTE: We recognize waymarking as a global hobby and welcome waymarks from all countries. However, if the waymark is written in a language other than English, an English translation is required. The English translation does not need to be perfect, just clear enough for the Officers and other viewers to understand what the waymark is about. And, as always, please cite your sources. Thank you!

You must personally have visited the location/object. The waymark must include at least one photo taken by yourself, but additional photos are greatly encouraged. If the item is inside a building, a photo of the outside of the building would also be appreciated, and the coordinates must be from the entrance to the building. The default photo of the waymark must be one taken by yourself. You are, however, welcome to upload a copy of the relevant drawing from the book if you want to.

Real World Locations:
We will accept buildings and natural geographic features; cities will NOT be accepted unless there is a view of a city depicted in one of the Tintin books that can be replicated with a real world photo (e.g., New York City Skyline from New York Harbor in Tintin in America). Cities or locations only mentioned, but not depicted, will not be accepted. See example below. If a location is mentioned together with a drawing, it will be accepted even if the drawing does not match the real life location perfectly. Some of the drawings are nearly 90 years old, so we cannot expect that you can take a photo that matches a drawing 100%. You should, however, try to do your best to create a photo that matches the drawing from the book. Please describe the connection between the drawing and your photo if it is not obvious to the eye.

                         NOT ACCEPTABLE                                                      ACCEPTABLE

You don't see Istanbul                                                You see Lake Geneva

We will ONLY accept references to Tintin books by Hergé as seen on this list.

If the waymark is of a location directly relating to one of the Tintin stories, you must also either upload an example of a drawing showing the similarity (see the example provided above for Petra, Jordan) or provide an internet link to the drawing.

Sculptures/Figures:
Both official merchandise from Mouilansart and copy items are accepted whether they are for sale or on permanent display in a store. Inspiration to find a store can be found here

Museums:
If the museum is dedicated to Tintin, we will only accept one waymark for the museum itself. If it is another kind of museum with one or more Tintin objects exhibited, the number of waymarks is limited to one per waymarker profile.

Instructions for Visiting a Waymark in this Category:
You must personally have visited the location/object and document it with a photo. Including yourself and/or your GPS in this photo is optional.
