Sequoioideae Trees
Managed By: Icon Here Sequoioideae Trees
Description:
To find Sequoioideae Trees all over the world outside their natural habitat.
Expanded Description:
English: Sequoia trees (Sequoioideae) are a subdivision of cypress trees (Cupressaceae), consisting of three species. Up to the last ice age, they were spread all over North America, Europe and Asia. Today, the only three surviving species occupy only a very small native habitat: The Giant Sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum) is native to California, along the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada. The Coastal Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) grows along the Pacific Coast in northern California and southern Oregon. The Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides) was believed to be extinct, until small numbers of survivors were discovered in several regions in China in 1941. Ever since the first discovery of sequoia trees in California in 1833, there have been attempts to plant them outside their natural habitats. Thus, today, single specimen can be found all over the world. It is those trees that we are looking for: There are over 100 known locations of Giant Sequoias in Germany, Austria and other central European countries. Coastal Redwoods can be found for example in Britain, Ireland, France, the Ukraine, Australia and New Zealand and the Dawn Redwood has become a popular exotic tree in parks and nature exhibits all over the world.´ Deutsch: Die Mammutbäume (Sequoioideae) sind eine Unterfamilie der Pflanzenfamilie der Zypressengewächse (Cupressaceae).
