In April 1917, a popular young Presbyterian minister left his church to accompany soldiers from the area to boot camp. When the division sailed for France, Thomas Bulla went along as chaplain. He stayed with his men in the trenches, assisting the wounded and the sick without regard to personal danger. Then, on October 15, 1918, during the battle along the Meuse, Bulla was himself wounded. He died two days later, the only chaplain of a Virginia regiment to die in WWI.
