The above coordinates identify the entry to the Pergamon museum, perhaps the most interesting of all the museums on Museum Island. Pergamon was a Greek city, located in what is now western Anatolia (Turkey). German archeologists, excavating the site, discovered a huge altar adorned with a sculpted frieze depicting war between the Greek gods and the giants. The altar was relocated to this museum where it is now on public display. Two other specatular exhibits in this museum are the Market Gate of Miletus (Currently undergoing heavy restoration) and the Ishtar Gate (Also undergoing some restoration). Along with these three attractions, you'll find other exhibits on Greek, Mesopotamian, and Islamic culture.

I also found the Egyptian collection in the Altesmuseum to be of special interest with the Nefertiti bust the climax of the exhibit. Some older guidebooks may still put this collection in the outlying district of Charlottenburg but it has been recently relocated to the second floor of the Altesmuseum.

The Alte Nationalgalerie is the last of the museums currently open to the public and contains European paintings.

The remaining two museums are closed for long term renovation.

Museum Island is located in the city center in what was formerly East Berlin.

Closest U-bahn station : Friedrichstrasse N 52 31.190 E 013 23.301. From there it's about 10 minutes by foot.

A ticket allowing entrance to all of the museums costs € 12.00. It costs less if you only want to see one of them.
