A magnificent, full-sized reproduction of the statue of "David" by Michelangelo (one of only two castings ever made) is located in Fawick Park in downtown Sioux Falls. Cast from the famous sculpture completed by Michelangelo in 1504, it depicts a young, confident David poised to lash out with his sling at the giant, Goliath. The original is located in Florence, Italy and is considered to be on of the finest sculptures in the world.
In 1971, the "David" statue was given to the city and to Augustana College by Thomas Fawick, a Sioux Falls Native who made a fortune as an inventor and automobile manufacturer. The statue of "David" generated considerable controversy in the city when it first arrived. Some felt a nude body displayed in public was not only in bad taste, but would have a bad effect on the community's moral values. The statue was placed facing away from traffic, and trees were planted to screen it from the street.
