Richard Caswell commanded the patriots at the Battle of Moores Creek Bridge and was appointed brigadier general of the New Bern District by the Provincial Congress in 1776. Caswell commanded the North Carolina troops at the Battle of Camden in 1780.
He served as North Carolina's first Constitutional Governor from 1782 to 1784. In 1787, he was one of North Carolina's delegates to the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia. He is buried in Kinston in the family cemetery. The site is now a state historic landmark.
I find it interesting that Caswell's military record isn't on the grave marker, just the fact that he was Governor and was a Master Mason. This may be explained by the fact that the Battle of Camden was a disastrous loss for the Colonials and Caswell accepted some responsibility for the defeat. It may have been thought unwise at the time to mention up his military service. Today, such losses are unimportant. He was a patriot true and true and that's what counts.
Caswell's biography on the Biographical Directiory of the United States Congress can be found HERE.
