This waymark takes you to the gravesite memorial for Chief David Spintlum (Cexpe’nthlEm). The memorial was originally placed directly on the ground, but at some point has been placed atop of a concrete base. It is located behind the Parish Hall, in Lytton, BC. There are reports of other graves beside his, but they are unknown. Please be respectful of this fact, and photograph from outside the grass area. The precise dates of birth and death are unknown, only the years are.
Description:
One of the most influential people to help shape the Canadian province of British Columbia. Cexpe’nthlEm was the First Nations Chief who negotiated peace, and stopped the progression of an impending war, during the Fraser Canyon Gold Rush era. DVD's of the documentary film illustrating this piece of history, are available from the Lytton Visitor Info Booth, for purchase. The bridge crossing the Thompson river in Lytton, BC was recently renamed for Chief David Spintlum. Our Premier at the time, had this to say: “In renaming this bridge, we pay tribute to an important First Nations leader, respected by Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal peoples alike; someone whose wisdom and good counsel helped shape our province,” -- Premier Campbell.
