This site marks the location of the mayham tower that was erected during the seige of Fort Cornwallis. Fort Cornwallis was one of the last positions held by the British during the Revolutionary War, and it's 3-day seige led to its surrender to the Americans, who held it until the end of the war.
The seige of the fort is celebrated every year with a reenactment by period actors at St. Paul's Cathedral, as well as encampment of at the in North Augusta, SC.
As the marker states, a mayham tower is a "tower contructed of logs filled with earth...[where] a six-pounder gun was lifted into position."
