Nuclear power came into human history with a bang: The bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
The peaceful use of this energy started on a lot smaller scale. On December 21, 1951, a nuclear reactor lit - yes – four light bulbs!
The place is EBR-1 - Experimental Breeder Reactor-I, the first nuclear reactor to produce surplus energy.
The plant was decommissioned in 1964 and is now a national historic landmark. It is open daily from 9 to 5 and while the whole subject of nuclear energy remains controversial, the plant is definitely worth a visit.
