In the Old Town area of San Diego, there is an old cemetery that dates from the time of the earliest Spanish settlers. Apparently, when San Diego Avenue was created, the El Campo Santo (The Holy Field) cemetery was in such disrepair, the road builders did not know there were graves where they decided to put the road.

In several places near the El Campo Santo cemetery, there are brass medallions in the sidewalk, and even in the road, that identify that location as a "Grave Site."
This particular worn and weathered medallion is in the road.
Several other medallions can be found in the sidewalk outside the cemetery gate.
Behind the sign, there a many interesting, historic markers on graves that fared better than those that ended up beneath the busy road and well-traveled sidewalk.
The Old Town area of San Diego is a popular destination for tourists. There are museums, shops, and many great places to eat. The area has plentiful parking and is served by the popular San Diego Trolley.
There are even tours offered to visit the "ghostly" sites since paranormal activity has been recorded in the area.
