MARKER TEXT: Formed March 12, 1800 out of Westmoreland, Allegheny, and Lycoming counties. Named for Gen. John Armstrong, who had destroyed the Indian Village at Kittanning, 1756. Here, county seat was laid out, 1803, and "Daugherty Visible" typewriter invented in 1881.

This marker is the usual blue and gold sign mounted on a post adjacent to the steps outside the Armstrong County Courthouse. The courthouse is easy to find in its impressive location on the hill at the north end of Market Street in Kittanning. The Courthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. On the Courthouse wall near the entrance, there is a Pennsylvania Historical Plaque commemorating General John Armstrong. On the new addition to the Courthouse near the parking lot is the Armstrong County War Memorial. This memorial features a time line spanning 240 years and has a beautiful portrayal of scenes from the various wars.

The county’s main historical event was John Armstrong’s attack on the Indian village of Kittanning and the associated battle of Blanket Hill. The county recently hosted a reenactment of these events for the 250th Anniversary of the French and Indian War. See links below. There is also a link for the Daugherty Visible typewriter.

Kittanning is the county seat of Armstrong County. Be sure to take a walk at the town’s beautiful Riverfront Park along the Allegheny River.
