Following the end of the Civil War, most former Confederate states were in dire financial condition and under occupation by Federal troops. Monuments and memorials to the Confederacy or Confederate soldiers were almost impossible during Reconstruction. With only a few exceptions, there was no money to build them and any organized gathering to place a monument would be refused by the Federals.

So, it came as a surprise to me to find a monument placed only 3 1/2 years after the war's end. Local ladies in Fayetteville raised the funds to build this memorial, which is located in the Confederate graveyard portion of Cross Creek Cemetery #1. The monument was dedicated on December 30, 1868.

The main inscription reads:

ERECTED
DEC. 30, 1868.

Nor shall your glory be forgot,
While Fame her record keeps
On honor points the hallowed spot
Where valor proudly sleeps

The remaining three inscriptions read:

On Fames eternal camping ground
Their silent Tents are spread
Rest on embalmed & sainted dead
Dear as the blood ye gave

WOMANS'S
record
to the
HEROES
in the dust

IN
MEMORY
OF THE
CONFEDERATE
DEAD

Near the memorial are the graves of Confederate Soldiers.
