Vinson Massif is the highest point on the continent of Antarctica, and the seventh of the Seven Summits.

First spotted in 1957 by a US Navy Aircraft, the mountain was named for Carl Vinson, a Georgia congressman who was a key supporter of funding for Antarctic research.
