The original Boyd's Tavern was constructed in 1790.
It was a small one-story dwelling & tavern. Around 1816 the building was expanded and more closely resembles the present structure. By the 1820s, the building had evolved into a federal style structure. Boyd's Tavern provided a place for people visiting the county seat on business to stay. Its location right across the street from the County Courthouse made it an ideal location.
Boyd's Tavern was where Confederate troops in the area mustered prior to marching off to war. Following the Civil War, the owners sought to give the tavern a different appearance. These changes are attributed to Jacob Holt, an architect-builder working in southside Virginia in the 1870's. The early decades of the 1900's saw more exterior alterations. The tavern became a thriving hotel and then a boarding house which converted to apartments in 1922. The structure is now used for rental events and tours.
