The first account of Jones County was in 1823, when that famous
Trail Blazer of the West, Jedidiah Smith (Jed Smith Historic Marker), traveled through the area enroute from Ft. Kiowa to Montana.
Murdo was also on the American Fur Post Trail from the Little White River to Ft. Pierre Choteau. The first county in the region was named Mercer in 1873. Then in 1875, the county was re-named Pratt, which was larger than several States. It was re-named Lyman County in 1897, and then split into Jones County in 1916. The First State Bank, ancestor to Jones County State Bank, was the first edifice in Murdo built in 1904. Murdo is on the Central/Mountain Time Zones, but uses Central Time locally.
