Union fort built by the 85th New York Regiment. It was taken on April 18, 1864, in one of the heaviest assaults of the seige.
This historical marker is loacated on Campbell Street at Wilson Street in Plymouth (the notation in Guide to North Carolina Highway Historical Markers: Ninth Edition indicating it is located on Winston Street is incorrect). It was erected in 1961.
The 85th Redoubt was also known as Fort Wessells.
