Originaly the post was established by the Spanish to protect the then infant town of Monterey in the late 1700's. Since that time, it was later controled by the Mexicans after they one there indepedence is the 19th centurey. When the Mexican war broke out, its was captured and again switched hands to the Americans where it was garrisoned and used as a western post during the Civil War. After the civil war, the post was dormant for a number of years until almost the end of the century, when it was again occpied by the Americans. The last horse mounted calverey unit was stationed here until the early 20th centurey. After that, the post was used as a logistics station up untill and during World War II. Later it becme a satalite post of the now closed Fort Ord. Then, in the 1970's the still young DLIFLC was moved and permanently stationed at the post.
The DLIFLC is the premier language school in the world. 36 languages are taught to almost 3500 soldiers, airmen, seamen and marines at any one time. The langueges taught range from common Spanish all the way to Korean and Chinese.
