Fifty-four Confederate soldiers, who died at a nearby wartime hospital, are buried in a cemetery near the marker. Kittrell's location at a railroad junction made it a good spot for the 300-bed facility, created in mid-1864.
The coordinates for the cemetery itself are:
N 36 13.534
W078 26.401
There is adequate signage in Kittrell to locate the cemetery without coordinates. Note that while the marker reads 52 buried soldiers, there are actually 54 soldiers in the cemetery. These can can be spotted by newer markers.
To record your own visit to this marker, take and post your own photo of the historic marker and post it with your log. This photo is proof of your visit and is required. Thanks.
