Text on the memorial:
In God We Trust * United We Stand / September 11, 2001 Memorial Garden / * Dedicated June 22, 2002 * / the ninth month and eleventh day after the devasting event / This memorial is a remembrance and in honor of all the people affected by the devastating attack on the United States of America on September 11, 2001. Four domestic airline flights were hijacked by terrorists and used as bombs to cause as much destruction and loss of life as possible. / The concept of this garden emerged from compassion for the victims, survivors, and rescue and recovery workers. The symbolic design was conceived by Bob D. Whitman. The eagles represent America’s freedom. The pentagon shape represents the United States Government. / The twin granite towers represent the New York World Trade Center Towers, the major disaster area. The other granite towers are in memory of lives lost on American Airline Flights Nos. 11 and 77 and United Airlines Flights Nos. 93 and 175. Sacrifices made by the New York Fire and Police Departments, the U.S. Armed Services, and medical personnel are also memorialized by these towers. The three U.S. flags flying high above the memorial are reminders of the crash sites; New York City, Arlington, Virginia, and Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The supporting flagpoles honor all rescue and recovery personnel. The German Shepherd is a tribute to the faithful, hardworking canines used in rescue and recovery. / Soil from the three crash sites is incorporated into the soil of this garden, making this hallowed ground. Other portions of the soil are entombed in three special containers. / September 11, 2001, changed our lives forever. We hope this memorial garden will give some solace to a grieving nation, that we shall not forget the more than 3,000 lives lost. That day is a horrible example of what man can do to fellow man. We hope the final conclusion to the “War Against Terrorism” will bring peace to our world.
