Bridgeport, OK is a ghost town. Once a promising location for trade and shipping from this rich agricultural area, the town was negatively affected by flooding from the nearby Canadian River, and in-fighting among its citizens. Today the town has only about 30 households in residence.
This outdoor warning device consists of two banks of 8 horns each, arranged in a 360 degree pattern. The siren is mounted on a cross-beam of the municipal water tank. This water tank is located on State Avenue, in the northeast part of town, just east of Main Street. The siren would be used to alert residents to fires or approaching tornadoes. Bridgeport is in a section of Oklahoma prone to significant weather events, and this siren is a welcomed sight in town.
