Free Fall III
Material: Stainless Steel
Location: LaSalle Square at the corner of Empire and Fountain streets in Providence, Rhode Island
Free Fall III is a combination of 15 metallic cubes of various sizes, diminishing on the way to the top, loosely stacked to give the sense of actively rising skyward. Their highly reflective silver surfaces are randomly wavy while maintaining right angle geometry along each edge. The base resembles a weathered wooden crate.
The informational card reads:
Sculptor Rado Kirov’s background is in fine metal work. He used copper, silver, and gold to create stunning pieces that were commissioned as gifts for Pope John Paul II and the Crown Prince of Japan. Looking for a new direction later in his career, he turned to stainless steel. Kirov developed a new technique for manipulating the material, using its inherent physical properties to create shimmering, three-dimensional surfaces that draws the viewers into their reflections — something he dubbed the “Mercury Effect.” Free Fall III is the largest work yet in this series, and it’s having its world premiere right here in Providence. Enjoy!
