Text of Plaque: HYMAN ASHER PERLSTEIN
(1869-1948)
Born in Lithuania, which at the time was controlled by Russia; came to the United States of America at age 15; arrived in Beaumont in 1889; married Miriam Gordon in 1893; three daughters survived: Lillian Perlstein Selber, Eleanor Perlstein Weinbaum, and Juliet Perlstein Simon. Mr. Perlstein was a blacksmith, entrepeneur, capitalist, and an early developer of downtown Beaumont. He was loved and respected for his generous acts, and in 1947 was awarded the Exchange Club's Golden Deeds Award.
THE GRANITE COLUMN The granite column was the cornerstone for the six-story Perlstein Building, completed in 1907, and, at the time, the tallest building between Houston and New Orleans. The top floor of the building was occupied by physicians, and the Beaumont Chamber of Commerce had its offices on the fifth floor. S.H. Kress was a ground floor tenant for 70 years. In 1944 the building was destroyed by fire and in 1946 a new five-story building was built. It was demolished in 1977.
OTHER PROPOPERTY OWNERS While the Perlstein Building occupied the southwest corner of the block, other property owners included Jae Gordon, Sol Gordon, the T.S. Reed family; the Liberty Theater and the Temperance Hall were also in this block. A three-story annex behind Kress housed the Beaumont Implement Company and the Beaumont Enterprise and Journal.
