The Martin Family, Barney, Rosie and their sons John and William managed a stage stop in the town of Antelope Valley in the Wickenburg area. They were forced out of the area by by Charles Stanton who owned a competing stage stop a few miles away. The Martins were headed to the nearest rail stop in Maricopa many miles to the south. When they reached the Brill ranch they purchased supplies and continued on their way. A few days later the Brill cowboys found the Martins murdered next to their burnt wagon. Stanton and a gang under his employ were suspected of the deaths but never brought to justice. Stanton was later shot by the brother of a lady he insulted. The Martin's bodies were brought back to the Brill ranch and interred in the ranch cemetery.
