The Hassayampa is a desert river that flows below ground through most of its course. For geological reasons the river is above ground in this area which was once the Brill Ranch. The Nature Conservancy acquired the property in 1992 and protects it as an endangered riparian habitat. Over 280 species of birds have been identified in the area. The visitor center has received reports of a mountain lion sheltering within the preserve for the winter of 2018/2019. The property provides parking, restrooms, a visitor center and a small gift shop. There are maintained trails through the area.
