The site of the former Prisoner of War camp covers an area of 140 hectares, mostly the area now is open grassland with remains of building scattered throughout. The camp operated from 1941 until February 1947 and housed prisoners from Italy, Korea, Indonesia, Taiwan, Java and Japan
The site is renown for the escape at 2am on 5 August 1944 when around 1100 Japanese prisoners staged an outbreak, 378 escaped outright and 231 Japanese and 4 Australians died, the escapees were recaptured over the following 9 days.
