This time capsule was created and put in place by the Woonsocket Centennial Commission in 1988. It is located near the Woonsocket Harris Public Library on a peninsula of land at the parking lot entrance northwest of the building. The above ground memorial is a red brick form with two engraved granite components and a wooden arch. A cobblestone walkway covered by a wood pergola is in front of the set-up.

Two segments of polished gray granite describe the time capsule. The larger has approximate dimensions of 7.5’ L x 1’ W x 2’ H and is on the ground facing to the northeast. The smaller, yet still substantial, portion is a horizontal capstone of about 7’ x 1.5’ x 6”.

The lower granite is engraved with nine rectangular honed fields and two circular seals. Working from the top down:

The two seals flank the title of this monument. Both appear badly damaged, most likely by weathering from their intricate designs facing upwards on an angle. On the left is the official City of Woonsocket seal and on the right appears to be a special seal for commemorating the city’s centennial year, though only a rough trace of the number “100” is partially legible after 30 years. The title is in the largest honed area and reads:

CITY OF WOONSOCKET, RHODE ISLAND
CENTENNIAL TIME CAPSULE

On the same upwardly sloping face and horizontally aligned beneath the title are four similarly sized honed rectangles, each engraved with the name and title of Woonsocket Centennial Commissioners and the mayor. From left to right, they are:

JOHN R. REYNOLDS
CHAIRMAN

CHARLES C. BALDELLI
MAYOR

N. DAVID BOULEY
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

LAWRENCE VERY
TREASURER

The long vertical face of the stone is engraved in a fashion as above with four rectangles; two centered and stacked and one each to the left and right. Clockwise from the center top, they are:

THIS MONUMENT IS A GIFT
TO THE PEOPLE OF WOONSOCKET
PRESENT AND FUTURE

SPECIAL THANKS TO:
JOHN C. O’HEARNE
O’HEARNE ASSOCIATES

FLEET/NORSTAR
J. TERRANCE MURRAY
CHAIRMAN AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

SPECIAL THANKS TO:
PAUL A. MENOCHE
MENOCHE FUNERAL HOME

The capstone rests on top of a red brick structure with its concrete top. The lid is engraved with instructions in three honed rectangles in two lines. Top and center reads:

TO BE OPENED

Below to the left reads:

SILVER VAULT 2038

Below to the right reads:

GOLDEN VAULT 2088
