Le respect des ses origines et de sa famille, ses nombreux talents et son désir d’exceller, l’ont guidé tout au long de sa vie. If fut successivement membre du Régiment de Trois-Rivières, du Régiment de la Chaudière, et du Royal 22e Régiment. Il commandait le Royal 22e Régiment à la fin de la campagne d’Italie et terminait la guerre de 1945 comme commandant de brigade. En Corée en 1953, avec l’ONU, il y commandait une brigade. Fait extraordinaire, au sein de l’OTAN en Allemagne en 1961, il devient commandant d’une division britannique. Il voulait créer un climat favorable à l’épanouissement professionnel et culturel des militaires francophones. Une grande victoire fut l’établissement d’un college militaire voué à la formation Universitaire d’officiers francophones à St-Jean-sur-Richelieu en 1952. En 1967, pour favoriser l’entrainement des francophones de l’armé blindée et de l’infanterie, il forme la 5e brigade et double la superficie de la Base de Valcartier. Il installe dans l’Ouest canadien, le fameux Régiment aéroporté canadien qui comprenait deux commandos, dont l’un était francophone. Maintes fois reconnu et décoré, il a gravi les plus hauts échelons dans les Forces canadiennes, en devenant en 1966, le premier Chef d’état-major francophone. Très avant-gardiste il crée la Force Mobile, à St-Hubert en 1965. Il pousse l’audace jusqu’a faire l’unification des Forces canadiennes. Les trois Services (Armée de terre, Marine, Forces aériennes) totalement unifiés, allaient porter la même tenue de service, l’uniforme vert, pendant 20 ans.

The respect of his origins and family, his numerous talents and great desire to excel have guided him all through his life. He was successively member of the Three Rivers Regiment, the Regiment de la Chaudière and the Royal 22e Regiment. He was commander of the Royal 22e Regiment at the end of the Italy campaign and ended the war as brigade commander in 1945. In Korea in 1952, within the UN, he was commanding a brigade. An extraordinary fact, in 1961, with the NATO forces in Germany, he became commander of a British division. He said he wanted to create a favourable climate for the professional and cultural development of the francophones in the military. A great victory was the establishment of a military college dedicated to the formation of francophone officers in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu in 1952. In 1967, to promote the training of francophones in the armour and artillery, he created the 5th Brigade and doubled the surface of Base Valcartier. In the Canadian West, he installed the famous Canadian Airborne Regiment composed or two commandos, one of which was francophone. Many times recognized and decorated, he reached the highest rank in the Canadian Forces, becoming in 1966, the first francophone Chief of Staff. Ahead of his time, he created the Mobile Force in St-Hubert, in 1965. He dared to pursue with the unification of the Canadian Forces. The three services (Army, Navy and Air Force) totally unified would then wear the same green service dress for 20 years.
