Le Charbonnage d’Argenteau-Trembleur est situé sur le territoire de Blegny, en Basse-Meuse, au Nord-Est de Liège, dans l’Avant-Pays de Herve. Installé en pleine campagne, à une centaine de mètres au-dessus du niveau de la Meuse, il constitue la dernière concession houillère du nord-est du bassin liégeois.
Par rapport à d’autres sièges d’extraction, Argenteau-Trembleur était caractérisé par une relativement faible profondeur, certaines couches affleurant même dans la campagne voisine. L’intérêt du site réside dans sa reconversion originale en domaine touristique et en lieu de mémoire, et dans la préservation de deux puits d’époques différentes (XIXe et XXe siècle). Le plus récent, toujours en service, donne accès aux galeries souterraines des étages -30 et -60 mètres, ouvertes aux visites.
La Province de Liège achète le site en 1980, et en confie la gestion à une association locale, l’Asbl Comté de Dalhem.
Les premiers visiteurs descendent dès le mois de juin, soit 2 mois après l’arrêt de l’exploitation. D’énormes problèmes d’exhaure menacent cependant rapidement la survie du projet. En 1983, la Communauté Française résout le problème en investissant dans la rehausse du circuit souterrain. L’action conjointe de la Province de Liège et de la Communauté Française (subrogée en 1994 par la Région Wallonne, puis aujourd’hui par le Commissariat Général au Tourisme), soutenues par la Fédération du Tourisme, les communes de Blegny et Dalhem et deux associations régionales, va ensuite permettre un développement progressif, le nombre de visiteurs atteignant rapidement la barre des 50.000. A partir de 1990, les fonds FEDER vont accélérer l’aménagement du site et contribuer à le doter d’une infrastructure d’accueil et d’exposition adaptée. Le cap des 100.000 visiteurs est atteint cette même année. Il sera dépassé chaque année depuis lors, pour atteindre maintenant entre 130000 et 160000 personnes par année.
En Blegny-Mine: The story of the successful conversion of the Argenteau-Trembleur coalmining site into a tourism and industrial heritage site.

The Charbonnage d'Argenteau-Trembleur is located in the territory of Blegny, in Basse-Meuse, north-east of Liège, in the Avant-Pays de Herve. Located in the countryside, about a hundred metres above the level of the Meuse, it is the last coal concession in the northeast of the Liège basin.
Compared to other extraction sites, Argenteau-Trembleur was characterized by a relatively shallow depth, with some layers flush even in the surrounding countryside. The interest of the site lies in its original conversion into a tourist attraction and a place of memory, and in the preservation of two wells from different periods (19th and 20th centuries). The most recent, still in service, gives access to the underground galleries on the -30 and -60 metre floors, open to visitors.
The Province of Liege bought the site in 1980, and entrusted its management to a local association, the Asbl County of Dalhem.
The first visitors came down in June, i.e. 2 months after the end of the operation. However, huge mine problems quickly threatened the survival of the project. In 1983, the French Community solved the problem by investing in upgrading the underground circuit. The joint action of the Province of Liège and the French Community (subrogated in 1994 by the Walloon Region, then today by the General Commission for Tourism), supported by the Federation of Tourism, the municipalities of Blegny and Dalhem and two regional associations, will then allow a progressive development, the number of visitors quickly reaching the 50,000 mark. From 1990 onwards, ERDF funds will accelerate the development of the site and help provide it with an appropriate reception and exhibition infrastructure. The 100,000 visitors mark was reached that same year. It will be exceeded every year since then, now reaching between 130,000 and 160,000 people per year.
