Native settlers from Aruba are believed to have arrived on canoes from the mainland (South America) about 2,500 years ago. We named the period during which these people inhabited the island the Pre-ceramic Period (2500 BC- 1000 AD) as it preceded the introduction of ceramics. (visit link)

The sign reads:

"This canoe is a gift from the Wayuu Community of Riohacha, Colombia to the people of Aruba."
