PIC 2,187 square miles, or 1.4 million acres, in area, the Colville Indian Reservation is one of the largest Indian reservations in Washington State. The reservation is home to the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation, comprised of twelve nations, the Chelan, Chief Joseph Band of Nez Perce, Colville, Eniat, Lakes, Methow, Moses-Columbia, Nespelem, Okanogan, Palus, San Poil and Wenatchi. Established by an executive order in 1872, the reservation houses approximately 5000 tribal and 5000 non-tribal members.

In the town of Coulee Dam is the Colville Tribal Museum, exhibiting history of the Colville tribes through artefacts collected by the tribes and interpretive displays.

In 2010 the museum undertook the task of remodeling and updating, the project taking a full year to complete. Just before it was to hold its grand reopening, which took place on March 25, 2011, the Grand coulee Star published the following article on the reopening.

The Colville Confederated Tribes will show off their yearlong re-modeling and revamped museum through a community open house and celebration beginning at 11 a.m. this Friday, March 25.

Visitors will see legends of the 12 tribes, take in some short movies about tribal issues, listen to SUM speeches and even get a free lunch.

Dan Brudevold, executive director of History and Archaeology, will act as master of ceremonies, and Harvey Moses. Jr.. vice-chair of the Colville Business Council will speak.

After a time of touring the new spread out displays. visitors can go across the street to the Coulee Dam Community Presbyterian Church, where a free lunch will be served. New displays feature basketry, root gathering, fishing and hunting, boarding school, and the"Ceremony of Tears" when the Columbia River started to fill up and fishing areas at Kettle Falls were flooded. A veterans' section and information on Forts Colville and Okanogan are provided.

There's even a display of cowboys and cowgirls within the museum. The ever popular gift store is still a feature of the museum downstairs. along with a classroom area.

And oldtime pictures will likely continue to stop visitors as they rotate through the museum displays.

A spokesperson said the upper level of the museum was totally gutted during the remodeling. The museum is located at 512 Mead Way. in east Coulee Dam.
