[EN] "The Neuer Markt in front of the Rotes Rathaus was Berlin's second inner-city marketplace after the Molkenmarkt. The redesign after the war means that nothing can be seen of its former structure.

To the west of Alexanderplatz lies a traditional area - the former New Market. There is still market activity in front of the town hall, but the square is no longer called Neuer Markt. Actually, it has no name at all. Until the Second World War, the Neuer Markt was a historic town square at St. Mary's Church. Due to the redesign after the war, nothing of its former structure can be recognized anymore.

The New Market before the Second World War
In the middle of the 13th century, the twin city of Berlin/Cölln expanded to the northwest. Beside the old market at the Mühlendamm the new market arose at the Marienkirche. There was a lot going on: weekly markets were held and executions were carried out on the high court until 1720. The end of the markets came when the Zentralmarkthalle on Alexanderplatz opened in 1886."
